The 12-episode Korean series, out on Netflix, zeroes in on the social inequalities that were exposed by the pandemic, while at the same time offering strong commentary on the toxicity of the teenage experience. It is, after all, set inside the most Darwinian of all playgrounds, and the iciest of all societal snowglobes—high school. It’s a consistently gripping and imminently bingeable show that sticks to the syllabus, and then goes ahead and wins brownie points for extracurricular activities, too.

For instance, All of Us Are Dead would have been virtually impossible to watch had it been populated by the high-schoolers from HBO’s Euphoria. Hilariously, even though the kids in this show are around the same age as the ones in Euphoria, cigarettes are only ever mentioned once, when the characters make a big deal out of it after one of them confesses to being a smoker.

I don’t understand why there are so many negative reviews for All of Us Are Dead. It was genuinely good and had some great techniques, and most importantly it stuck to the webtoon.

Some Netflix adaptations veer off-script when compared to the source material, one example being Sweet Home (it was still a good watch, and I understand that the webtoon author wanted Netflix to change the plot slightly). When this does happen, it can make watching the drama a bit less exciting, because you might be anticipating how one of your favourite scenes is portrayed, only for it not to be included or not done well.
This is not the case with All of Us Are Dead, and so I highly commend the writer for their work.

A lot of criticism around this show is about the plot line. The webtoon was published in 2002, when zombie entertainment hadn’t been overused, so maybe the plot might be typical, but the drama has been written in a way to prevent it from getting boring.

I loved that this drama also tackled the important and currently prevailing issue of bullying. As an avid watcher of movies and shows, especially KDramas, bullying is shown in high school environments but not really addressed unless the main character is a victim. I liked that All of Us Are Dead showed a parent’s point of view as well, so A-plus for including and developing this subplot.

Cinematography was another gripe, but it was very good in my opinion and many others’. Background score/OST aren’t as important for dramas of this genre; although they are awesome when done well, they’re not necessary.

Lastly, please don’t compare this to Happiness. Happiness is also another good show (though to be honest many people hyping it up are doing so only because the male lead actor returned to the industry after serving in the military for a while), and while both dramas belong in the same genre, they are very different, so please respect that.

I’d also recommend checking out the actual webtoon of All of Us Are Dead as it’s one of the best out there and it’s fun to go back and compare the panels to the scenes in the show!
